Review by Brandon Ray:

Last night, Yonrico Scott Band and Scrapomatic made their final stop of their "mini-tour" of the south at the Richmond Fusion Jazz and Blues club. Let me start off by saying that this is my favorite place to see any act. It's a bit reminiscent of how I envision those old jazz clubs of the 30s & 40s...at least what the image I get from the black and white photographs. You walk down a narrow flight of stairs and are greeted by a guy working the door.  To the left, you can hear slight hint of music behind the closed door.  As you walk in, the place feels immediately intimate, an almost exclusive feel.  The crowd is still, as you can hear the nuances of every note being played.

On with the review: Not your typical DTB or Allman crowd.  I think a lot of the attendants were friends of the bar's owners and some were there just to catch some music, but nonetheless they were definitely impressed. Scrapomatic opened up with Let the Mermaids Dance with Me. Paul Olsen played the first 3 or 4 songs on his resonator, then went to a Gibson hollowbody guitar. Last time I'd seen them he was playing a Strat.  The only original song they did that I remember was Moanin'. All the songs they did, with the exception of two, I had heard them do in my first two Scrapomatic shows. The songs I remember right this second are Lousiana Anna, a song Paul sung that Ray Charles covered (Mike sang harmony); Lotus (Hot Water)??; and another song that has something about "Sing the Blues" they ended with Rev. Gary Davis' Hallelujah, and did a cover of Skip James Crow Jane. The Crow Jane was more like the original than the way the Derek Trucks Band plays.

Between breaks, I saw Kofi, and mentioned I had seen Oteil at the same venue a few months ago. We started chatting a bit about music and talked about Oteil's guitarist Mark Kimbrell. Todd then came by and we talked a bit. Todd's always welcoming to familiar faces. The crowd was responsive to the YSB. Even though it was a sitting only crowd, they definitely were into it. Mike Mattison mentioned that this crowd was very attentive and Paul Olsen agreed saying that this was the type of show they enjoyed playing. Yonrico was his usual self on the drums. Yonrico, has  to be my favorite drummer I've seen, I watch him as much as I do Derek, which is a rarity being a guitarist myself. Todd "Family Man" was in good spirits laying down the low end and playing some nice solos on his Modulus. Kofi seemed to be really feeling it that night. I told the guys they had to have been listening to Herbie Hancock on the tour bus today, and sure enough they had been listening to him, it was really coming out in Kofi's playing. It was a very enjoyable show, and it's always nice to see the rest of the band really flex their muscles. Kofi stopped by our table after the show and talked to us a bit....actually asking me if I was a musician. I told him that I played guitar, and a bit of slide, citing Derek as my primary influence, actually saying I'm trying to branch out more and listen to other slide players. Kofi said Derek was the band's librarian and was always turning on the members to other music. He also talked about how him and Rico played with MC Hammer (pants and all) and Whitney Houston, but this is what he really enjoys. I remember him saying that "All that was stupid."  Overall it was a top notch show, and the band says they're coming back again. They enjoyed the venue and said they have several connections to the venue...so here's to the next YSB show at Fusion. Hopefully the guys come back to this venue and maybe some more of you can make it out.  It's worth the drive.

Scrapomatic, Yonrico Scott Band and More: From www.Jambands.com

Yesterday, we reported on a Scrapomatic tour with the Yonrico Scott Band, and the first show of said tour was a lively evening of great music culminating with four great musicians joining the YSB (which consists of Rico, Todd Smallie and Kofi Burbridge). Each band performed a full set, Scrapomatic silencing the room with their gripping guitar/voice duo music, and YSB in turn igniting the crowd with a high energy set of their own.

However, it was the final set that indicated how special this brief tour looks to be. Scrapomatic’s Paul Olsen emerged to lend guitar to a spirited take on Jimmy Smith’s “Back at the Chicken Shack.” Olsen remained as Scrapomatic/DTB lead vocalist Mike Mattison took center stage to lend his sweetly soulful vocals to Jimmy Reed’s “Ain’t That Lovin’ You Baby,” and Ray Charles’ “I Believe To My Soul.” The instrumentals were ferocious, with Scott and Smallie relentlessly bringing fiery rhythms, and Olsen and Burbridge going almost face to face as they traded a stunning array of licks. Toward the end of the Charles number, former Parliament Funkadelic member Doug Smith jumped up to join Kofi behind the keys much to the delight of the attentive crowd. After this, Olson and Mattison chose to watch the final number, as Augusta guitarist Elliot Holden took the stage, and he, Smith and the YSB performed an extended version of Wayne Shorter’s “Footprints.” After several minutes of exuberant cheering from the Decatur crowd, the YSB returned in their usual trio form to perform Herbie Hancock’s “Chameleon.”

As discussed yesterday, this mini-tour moves to the Bourbon Street Bar in Auburn, AL tonight and concludes tomorrow night at Fusion Jazz & Blues Club, Richmond, VA. I feel compelled to mention that Elliot Holden Band recently released their second CD, Radiance, and they will be performing tonight at the Racktime Billiards Club in Greenwood, SC, and at The Joint in Clemson, SC on June 16.
